25-year-old winger, Ashley Young, has apparently agreed on personal terms and signed a £15m transfer from Aston Villa to Manchester United. (Transfer supposedly to be complete in 7 days.) With Valencia, Nani, Giggs and Park Ji-Sung all fit and in good form – many fans have been questioning why and even how we could use him to improve our squad. There are several great qualities with Young, but the one we need the most is set-pieces. When in form, Ashley Young has been known to score quite a few beautiful free kicks and can also deliver great balls from a corner – something we’ve been lacking ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madrid. Replacing Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to be a tough ask. After all, this is a man who scored 118 goals in 196 appearances, terrified defenders with sheer pace and magical skill and could arguably be described as the best player ever to play under Sir Alex Ferguson before leaving in June 2009.
So a tough act to follow. It was nineteen days later when United signed a ‘replacement’ in the shape of Antonio Valencia, who came from Wigan for £16million. It’s fair to say the fans, and myself, weren’t exactly relishing the prospect of replacing a Ballon D’Or winner with a player from the bottom half of the league for less than a quarter of the price.
