Over the past few months, United have been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid keeper, David De Gea. Those rumours were proved correct when, last month, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that we’re interested in signing the Spanish stopper.
Not much is known of De Gea, so we got in contact with Julio Megía – an Atleti fan who runs the Forza Atleti blog. Julio speaks very highly of his club’s keeper, and you can read what he had to say below.
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that United have agreed a deal to sign 20-year-old Spanish ‘keeper, David de Gea. Ever since Edwin van der Sar confirmed his retirement earlier this season, United scouts have been searching the planet in hope of finding a suitable replacement.
It took us 6 years to find a replacement for Peter Schmeichel after he left United in 1999, and that’s something Fergie doesn’t want to go through again. We have been linked with several keepers in recent times, from the youth of De Gea, to the experience of Buffon, and Fergie has decided that de Gea is his man.
“We’ve been working on it for quite a while. We identified him quite a while back as one we should go for.
“He’s a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence and an outstanding replacement for van der Sar.
“We were looking for the same type of qualities as Edwin, because the one great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability.
“With David De Gea, he is very similar that way.”
The deal is expected to be officially announced in the coming days.
